Customer Spotlight: A Custom Loft Net in Asheville, NC
At Treehouse Supplies, we love hearing from our customers about how our products have become an integral part of their homes and lives.
Recently, we caught up with Justin Mitchell, a homeowner from Asheville, NC, who installed one of our custom nets in their unique home, affectionately named Crow’s Nest 2.0.
After six years of use, this incredible space has evolved into more than just a home—it’s become a place for creativity, aerial arts, and some unforgettable parties! In this interview, we explore how the net has transformed the interior of their house and continues to inspire new ways to play, connect, and entertain. Read on to hear about their journey, the stunning visual impact of the net, and their plans for future enhancements.
Treehouse Supplies: Thanks for sitting down with us! We’ve seen your photos of the net installed in your home, and they’re incredible! Can you start by telling us a little about your experience with the net you purchased from Treehouse Supplies? It’s been six years now, right?
Justin Mitchell: "Yes, that’s right! It’s hard to believe, but it’s been six years since we installed the custom net from Treehouse Supplies in our home in Asheville, NC, which we’ve affectionately named Crow’s Nest 2.0. We’ve loved it from day one, and I wanted to finally reach out to share some of our experiences and a few photos of how the net has aged over time."
Treehouse Supplies: It sounds like the net has held up well, but how has it evolved with use?
Justin Mitchell: "It’s been great! One thing that I hadn’t anticipated, but ended up loving, is the way the net casts shadows throughout the house. As a photographer, the interplay of light and shadows is something I’ve come to really appreciate. The shadows change depending on the time of day and season, and they create a whole different vibe, especially at night when we have the disco ball going or when there’s a full moon. It’s really magical."
Treehouse Supplies: That sounds beautiful! What other ways has the net become a part of your lifestyle?
Justin Mitchell: "We host a lot of house parties—I'm a DJ and music producer, so it’s really fun to mix music while friends are hanging out above me on the net. It’s become a bit of a rule at our house: no more than six adults on the net at a time, and anything that falls from a pocket belongs to the Crow’s Nest! [*laughs*] We don’t have kids, but that net sure gets a workout during our parties."
Treehouse Supplies: That sounds like a lot of fun! Is it used for anything else outside of parties?
Justin Mitchell: "Definitely. I work from home, and my workspace is right next to the edge of the loft, inches away from the net. It’s such a nice feeling to have the open space without a railing—it feels airy and spacious. My partner practices aerial silks, and we have a good friend who owns an aerial arts studio in Asheville. So, the net has also served as a circus net when our friends come over. In fact, we’re planning to install a trapeze and slackline over it soon to make it even more functional."
Treehouse Supplies: Wow, it sounds like Crow’s Nest 2.0 is turning into an aerial artist's dream! So, you mentioned that the net has stretched a bit over time. Are you planning to tighten it up?
Justin Mitchell: Yes, that’s something I wanted to ask you about. Over the years, the net has naturally stretched, so we’re planning to take it down soon. We’re bringing in scaffolding to fix some drywall cracks from the house settling and to install the trapeze and slackline. While the net’s down, I want to address the slack it’s developed. I have a friend who’s a fishing boat captain in Alaska, and he showed me a tool they use to tighten their nets during salmon season. I was thinking of trying a similar approach—pulling the outer two squares of the double-layered netting toward the main thick rope and securing it with paracord. But before we go ahead, I’d love to get your team’s advice to make sure we’re doing it right.
Treehouse Supplies: That’s definitely something we can help with! We're always here to support our customers- before, during and after installation! We’ll make sure you get the guidance you need to tighten it properly. It’s great to hear how the net has been such an integral part of your home and social life. One last question: what kind of feedback do you get from visitors about the net?
Justin Mitchell: "Everyone who comes to visit is absolutely blown away. It’s by far the most talked-about feature of our home. The reactions are always the same—people are amazed by the concept and how cool it looks in the space. It’s the perfect blend of fun and functionality, and I’m so happy with how it turned out. I’ve even passed along your contact info to some friends who are builders and others considering building their own homes. It’s been an amazing addition to our house."
Treehouse Supplies: That’s fantastic to hear. Thank you for sharing your story with us and for trusting us with such a central feature of your home. We can’t wait to see how Crow’s Nest 2.0 continues to evolve!
