Extending the Life of Your Treehouse: Why Modern Hardware Matters

Building a treehouse is a major investment in craftsmanship, creativity, and the natural environment around your home. But one of the biggest challenges every treehouse owner faces over time is something many people overlook during the initial build: trees grow.

As trees continue to expand year after year, hardware systems that once fit perfectly can eventually become stressed, corroded, or outgrown entirely. At Treehouse Supplies, we believe treehouse hardware should evolve alongside the tree itself — helping your structure remain safe, functional, and beautiful for decades.

Drawing from years of engineering development, field testing, and real-world construction experience, our team has developed an integrated approach to treehouse hardware designed specifically to maximize longevity and adaptability.

The Problem With Traditional Treehouse Hardware

Many treehouse systems on the market are designed only for the moment of installation. Over time, exposure to moisture, weather, and constant tree growth can create serious long-term issues.

One of the most common problems is corrosion. As untreated or minimally protected hardware ages, rust can compromise structural integrity and reduce the usable lifespan of the treehouse itself.

An example of heavily corroded hardware from a competitor brand, after roughly 12 years in service in Ohio.

Another issue is hardware capacity. Trees naturally increase in diameter over time, and eventually many support systems become “outgrown” by the tree. In many conventional systems, this can require major reconstruction or complete replacement of critical components.

Powder-Coated TABs Designed for Long-Term Durability

One of the defining features of Treehouse Supplies hardware is our powder-coated TAB system. Unlike many alternatives, our TABs are specifically designed to resist corrosion and maintain performance in wet, humid, or even salty environments for decades.

Powder coating creates a durable protective finish that helps shield the steel from environmental exposure while also providing a cleaner, more professional appearance.

For builders and homeowners alike, this means:

  • Longer hardware lifespan
  • Reduced maintenance concerns
  • Improved long-term reliability
  • Better performance in challenging climates

A Fully Integrated Support System: The future of Treehouse Fastening

Treehouse Supplies is unique in offering a fully integrated hardware ecosystem designed specifically to maximize the lifespan of the entire structure.

Our Treehouse Integrated Support System (TISS™) components include a Strut Support and a Suspension Anchor, which are engineered to work together in a wide variety of configurations, giving builders more flexibility regardless of:

  • Tree species
  • Tree size
  • Tree spacing
  • Platform design
  • Load requirements

This integrated approach allows designers and builders to create more adaptable structures while reducing compatibility issues between components.

Our exclusive TISS™ kits are compatible with most other treehouse manufacturer’s product lines. These kits can be used to fortify fasteners in a new build, and to extend the useful life of older treehouses built in trees that have exceeded the capacity of other manufacturer’s hardware.

The future of treehouse construction: an integrated fastening system engineered to maximize the load-bearing capacity of your foundation trees.

All TISS™ kits are “upwardly compatible” and can be incorporated in two scenarios:

New Builds:

Incorporate TISS™ Strut and/or Suspension Kits to increase load bearing capacity by installing with your primary fasteners.

Existing Builds:

Where perch real estate is lost due to tree growth, you can easily accommodate any new requirement, by adding our patented TAB extension components over the original fasteners, along with a Strut or Suspension Kit for reinforced support

Some common problems that the our Treehouse Integrated Support System™ solves include:

  • Tree growth over TAB perches, resulting in reduced beam clearance and tree health issues;
  • Tree growth that consumes suspension anchor points, rendering them un-inspectable and potentially unsafe;
  • TAB support options above (Suspension) and below (Strut) the perch, to provide options regardless of tree shape and size, or architectural features.

The Industry’s First TAB Extension System - Breathing new life into aging Treehouses

Badly aged and corroded treehouse hardware which was consumed by tree growth is corrected with our exclusive TISS™ TAB extension system.

One of the most innovative solutions developed by Treehouse Supplies is our patent-pending TISS™ TAB extension system.

As trees grow and gradually outgrow the original support hardware, our extension system allows the treehouse to continue functioning safely without completely rebuilding the support structure. In many cases, these extensions can add decades to the usable life of a treehouse.

Even better, our extension hardware is compatible with major third-party treehouse hardware systems, including Nelson and Garnier hardware.

That means even if your treehouse wasn’t originally built using Treehouse Supplies hardware, you may still be able to upgrade and extend the life of your structure using our system.

Continuous Innovation for Modern Treehouse Builders

At Treehouse Supplies, innovation never stops. Our engineering and construction teams are constantly refining products based on:

  • In-house engineering research
  • Customer feedback
  • Real-world construction experience
  • Long-term performance testing

Some recent examples include:

Powder-Coated Core TAB

The new Core TAB provides “big TAB” performance with simplified one-step installation at a more accessible price point.

SD and HD Thru-Bar Systems

Our SD and HD Thru-Bar systems are designed for double-sided loading applications such as:

  • Octagon platforms
  • Large platform corners
  • Multi-beam support points

These systems are especially useful when a tree can handle vertical loads but does not allow for standard TAB installation from both sides.

Redesigned Floating Brackets

Our updated Universal Floating Bracket was specifically designed to work with:

  • SD TABs
  • HD TABs
  • SD TAB extensions

This eliminates the need to purchase entirely new brackets when extending existing SD TAB systems.

The redesign also addresses a common failure point seen in high-load applications: UHMW separation.

Stronger Fastening for Safer Structures

Unlike some competing floating bracket systems that rely on a single lag bolt per side, Treehouse Supplies floating brackets use four offset structural screws for improved attachment strength.

This design offers several important advantages:

  • Increased shear strength
  • Improved withdrawal resistance
  • Better alignment within multi-ply beams
  • Reduced risk of beam separation
  • Lower chance of moisture buildup between plies

Over time, these small engineering improvements can significantly impact the long-term durability and health of both the structure and the supporting tree.

Built by People Who Build Treehouses

What truly separates Treehouse Supplies from many hardware manufacturers is that our products are developed not only by engineers, but also by experienced treehouse builders who work with these systems in the real world every day.

That practical experience drives smarter designs, better installation workflows, and hardware solutions that address the actual challenges builders encounter in the field.
